Do I use the defaults for indicators?..

In general, you do want to use the default settings provided by Base Camp Trading indicators. An exception is ValueCharts (R), and its variations, like Value Bars (R). For these indicators, it ships with AnalysisPeriod set to 14, and it should be set to 5. On some platforms, this input is known as NumBars.
